2020 LESSONS...5 WAYS TO BETTER YOURSELF IN 2023

THE YEAR WAS 2020...

and I look back at it as a year that had incredible promise and hope for our family. All seemed perfectly set up for it to become a year in which all our plans, all our hopes and big dreams came together.

I was so keen to look back and congratulate myself for having 2020 VISION. Everything pointed towards it becoming a fantastically rewarding year. BUT...

Having resigned from running our successful family business in September 2019, the challenge of establishing and growing a new business with my wife was exciting. I had already managed two national trips around the country to introduce our new venture to the market. The market responded with the acceptance all entrepreneurs crave.

By early Jan 2020, we had already received sizeable new orders, while a great deal of quotes and been requested. The year was ripe for the picking as I planned my third business trip to Mauritius in as many months.

We all know what happened post March of that year, and as I fast forward to reflect on the situation towards the end of 2020, our whole business needed to be redesigned.

We had to move our focus away from personalized service towards online sales. Explained differently, the business had to rely more on algorithms than on emotional intelligence.

This meant that we had to relinquish our competitive advantage – which was heavily weighted on our experience and passion for providing what the industry yearned for – something it needed. Online commerce is certainly the accepted way to sell one’s products today but as consumers, our gain in convenience has the unfortunate side effects such as misinformation and a complete lack of empathy during a transaction.

During this period in which the world changed as much as it did post the 911 attacks in NYC, I have also started to lose a bit of ground in my personal battle with the unwanted guest that lives inside of me.

My M.S. has moved to a Secondary Progressive stage.

This simply means that from here things will not get better, but the progress thereof can and will be slowed down. Even better yet, with the right medication, a balanced diet as well as my own respect from my physical and mental limitations, it can still be put into remission. (even if only temporarily...)

All this said, below you will find my

'PEARLS OF WISDOM'

for the new year which I thank 2020 (and the COVID CHAOS..) for highlighting to me....Use them, (or) dont use them

1. MISTAKES ARE WONDERFUL PERSONALISED GIFTS

- Mistakes can be conscious or subconscious – short lived or ever present.

- The actual event is not the concern.

ALWAYS LEARN FROM THE MISTAKE - and then take appropriate actions after the event

- Unwrap the mistake by viewing it as a priceless lesson.

2. FIND the RELIEF upon the RELEASE

- It is time to understand the healing power of vulnerability

- By allowing yourself to invite another person into your uncomfortable spaces, you actual unlock the potential to change your entire outlook and attitude to life for the good. In other words, SPEAK to someone about your concerns/fears/insecurities...

3. PATIENCE IS NOT A GAME PLAYED ALONE.

- So much easier said than done, patience can be excruciatingly painful

- I have learnt that the only way to respect the process and become truly patient is with the help of loved ones close to you.

- When you have the urge to manipulate the outcome (the opposite of being patient) simply ask for help as you battle your instincts to force an unnatural conclusion.

QUICK SIDE NOTE:

It is no coincidence that these three points above rely heavily on the support of another person. Even superheroes need help.

4. POSITIVITY IS THE ABILITY TO RESET ONESELF REGULARLY

I often get asked how I remain positive as I am constantly challenged with very serious physical, emotional, financial and spiritual hurdles.

I do not really know how to reply most of the time. I am human and DO face moments of self-doubt, utter exhaustion, frustration, and irritation at the poor pack of cards that I often sit with.

But I feel that the key to remaining positive lies in consciously and mindfully pushing the RESET button on how you perceive the road ahead.

ONCE RESET, and you completely set your mind wholeheartedly to believe that every predicament facing you is conquerable…you will succeed.

Muhammad Ali famously said something that first confused...then inspired me :

IMPOSSIBLE IS NOTHING

AND LASTLY...

5. BE A PERSON OF INTEGRITY

While we can all admit to times that we have let ourselves down by doing something that clearly goes against our own moral compass’ - and tends to really challenge and torment us at times, please know that making decisions based on what you know in your heart is right, is where you will find true peace and happiness.
